Step 2: Understand the 4Cs
Every diamond is graded on four parameters. Understanding these helps you prioritize what matters most to you.
Cut
Cut is the single most important factor in a diamond’s beauty. A well-cut diamond reflects light internally from facet to facet and disperses it through the top, creating brilliance and fire. Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor.
Our recommendation: Never compromise on cut. An Excellent or Very Good cut will make a lower-color or lower-clarity diamond look stunning. A Poor cut will make even a flawless diamond look dull.
Color
Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The differences between adjacent grades (e.g., G vs H) are extremely subtle and often invisible to the naked eye when the diamond is set in a ring.
Our recommendation: G or H color offers the best value. These diamonds appear white in any setting and cost significantly less than D-F grades.
Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Grades range from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included). Most inclusions in VS2 and above are invisible without 10x magnification.
Our recommendation: VS2 or SI1 clarity. These grades are “eye-clean” — no inclusions visible to the naked eye — and offer substantial savings over VVS and FL grades.
Carat
Carat is the diamond’s weight, not its size. A well-cut 0.90ct diamond can appear larger than a poorly-cut 1.00ct diamond. Prices jump significantly at round numbers (0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00), so buying just under these thresholds (e.g., 0.95ct instead of 1.00ct) can save 15-20% with no visible difference.
Step 3: Choose Your Metal
14K Gold
Contains 58.3% pure gold. More durable than 18K and more resistant to scratches. Ideal for active lifestyles. Slightly less vivid gold color.
18K Gold
Contains 75% pure gold. Richer, deeper gold color. Preferred for luxury jewelry. Slightly softer than 14K.
White Gold
Both 14K and 18K gold can be alloyed to appear white/silver. White gold is rhodium-plated for a bright finish. The plating may need renewal every 1-2 years.
Rose Gold
A warm, pinkish tone created by copper alloys. Increasingly popular for engagement rings. Available in both 14K and 18K.
Platinum
The densest and most durable precious metal. Naturally white (no plating needed). Hypoallergenic. More expensive than gold but extremely long-lasting.
Step 4: Select a Setting Style
Solitaire
A single diamond on a plain band. Timeless, classic, and allows the diamond to be the sole focus. The most popular engagement ring style worldwide.
Halo
A center diamond surrounded by a ring of smaller diamonds. Creates the illusion of a larger center stone and adds significant sparkle.
Three-Stone
Three diamonds representing past, present, and future. A meaningful and striking design.
Pavé
Tiny diamonds set along the band. Adds continuous sparkle without increasing the center stone size.
Step 5: Get the Ring Size Right
Getting the ring size correct without spoiling the surprise can be tricky. Here are reliable methods:
- Borrow a ring they currently wear on their ring finger and measure the internal diameter
- Ask a friend or family member who might know

- When in doubt, go slightly larger — sizing down is easier than sizing up

Every diamond should come with an independent grading report from a respected laboratory. The two most trusted are:
- GIA (Gemological Institute of America) — the global standard
